As stated by a senior defense spokesperson, the US armed forces executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four people.

“A US joint task force carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in open sea. Intelligence verified the vessel was transiting along a established drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male drug traffickers were killed, and no US military forces were harmed.”

Context and Recent Strikes

The statement follows a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military presence.

Just on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had conducted strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 military engagements have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Justifies Tactics Amidst Pressure

The government has faced growing demands to release video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have declined to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a success, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the limits of lawful warfare.

Although the administration has stated the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, comments from a top official appeared to suggest a wider geopolitical aim. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president cries uncle.”

This indicates the military campaign may be part of a push to oust Venezuela's sitting government.
