UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive game where a young woman harboring several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and drives. These entities can take over at will, releasing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the main character exploring a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The central gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms where their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
