The network's Leading New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. During a period often marked by dark humor, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family go about their everyday routines.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
What Comes Next
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to be part of that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
