Nutrition Assistance Scheduled to Expire for 41 Million During Continuing Government Closure
USDA officials stated recently that monthly food benefits through a critical national welfare initiatives are not going out next month because of the continuing federal closure.
Shutdown Extends Into 25th Day
The funding lapse had reached its 25th day at the time of the statement, in response to appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives asking the USDA to utilize reserve accounts to fund the upcoming nutrition payments.
“The reality is, funds are depleted,” the USDA stated. “Now, no payments will be distributed” beginning in November.
Millions Affected
Tens of millions of people count on these monthly payments, as reported by the USDA. Various areas, including New Mexico, use of this assistance affects a significant portion of citizens.
Documents reviewed by Reuters revealed that the department chose not to tap emergency reserves to cover next month's assistance.
Legislative Deadlock
Congressional leaders remain deadlocked about the way to fund and reopen federal agencies.
Remarks from the head of a prominent policy organization indicated that federal leadership could have acted to prepare in advance to avoid interruption in payments.
“Officials were able and expected to taken steps weeks ago to make arrangements to access these resources,” the comments added. “Conversely, it may choose not to use them to secure political leverage” as Republicans seek to influence Democratic senators to support legislation that would resume government operations.
