Miami Heat and Portland Trail Blazers Secure First Wins After Player Arrests
Miami put up eighty-six opening half points versus the Grizzlies
The Heat earned a overwhelming 146-114 win against the Grizzlies in their initial NBA game after player Rozier was arrested over alleged unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers coach Billups was also detained in connection with a extensive FBI probe into sports betting. The two individuals deny the allegations.
However, the Miami team were not distracted as they recorded 86 first-half scores to lead the Grizzlies by thirty-nine after two quarters, the biggest halftime lead in the team's 37 year existence.
Bam Adebayo led the way with twenty-four points and afterwards said Terry had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Bam said. "You support him through and through. That's our brother ultimately."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is somebody who is important to everyone. He has made a real positive impact on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and support for him as he goes through the situation."
Portland also secured their first game since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Billups' non-attendance and guiding the squad to a decisive 139-119 win against the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had great experiences with Chauncey and how he coached," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."
NBA Commissioner Silver 'Disturbed' over Recent Events
Speaking about the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Silver stated he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the NBA and supporters than the integrity of the game," he told a broadcaster. "Therefore I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting."
Silver also said an NBA investigation into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he participated for the Charlotte Hornets versus the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"It was brought to our attention by the authorities and the betting companies," he added.
"We investigated the matter and were open regarding it. Although there was the unusual wagering, we, frankly, found no evidence.
"Federal authorities has subpoena power... [it] can impose penalties, can take various actions that the league office is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been working with them from that point. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an indictment.
"And two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Rozier.
"Clearly, it appears unfavorable, but he's been suspended, and so it is a balance here between protecting people's rights and investigating."
