Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.

A Major Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL team.

Departure from Munich was expected after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.

Consistent Goalscoring to Boost United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in the Bundesliga.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be gathering momentum.

Their recent performances include qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.

On Miyazawa’s extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
