Explosion Costs Three Police Officers Amid Eviction Procedure in Northern Italy
Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a country home in the northern part of Italy.
How It Happened
The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews approached the property near the Verona region to execute an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.
All three deceased individuals served in the Carabinieri military police.
Investigation Developments
One male and one female were arrested at the location and a third person who ran away after the blast was apprehended shortly later. All three have been admitted to medical facility.
The blast could be noticed some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the area showed the property left as a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the past.
Property Situation
The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the property was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts incurred by the property owners.
Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the home. When the police came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials suspect a family member set off the explosion.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander Claudio Papagno told the media.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the interior minister said.
Impact Assessment
The wounded by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
The official believed the detonation had taken place on a story above the entrance and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.
Local Response
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told local news, adding that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Defence Minister Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
