Eric Adams Will Support Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Mayor Adams has announced his plan to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of public tension between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” However, in a new development, Mayor Adams reversed course, revealing he now intends to support the former governor in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.

“It is crucial to mobilize the Black and brown communities that have experienced gentrification on how important this race is,” the mayor stated.

He added, “They have watched their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I’m going to go to those neighborhoods and speak one on one with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the governor in those areas and get them involved.”

Race Dynamics and Current Developments

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose increasing popularity has made headlines internationally and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.

During a recent mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa stated they would reject the mayor's support if extended.

Months ago, Adams had launched his re-election campaign as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in return for his assistance with federal immigration raids across the city.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, the mayor answered journalists asking about the support announcement by stating, “I'm meeting Andrew later today.”

This development came a day after the two politicians were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ first game at Madison Square Garden, which took place immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
