Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off after a rollercoaster last day of play.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie from just over eight foot to seal the victory, repeating his only previous Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off victory against Fleetwood.
Final Round Drama
Rai entered the final round with a single stroke advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of 263 after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger edged one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the 17th and then missed a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final green.
Play-Off Climax
That led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the moment how it is. It is incredible to be stood here.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star left himself a bit too far to do, coming up a stroke short in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a spectacular 10-under closing round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.
Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of topping the leaderboard were dented by a dropped shot on the twelfth. English golfer Richard Mansell produced an excellent last round 63 to end up tied for fifth with Australian Hillier.
